ABR File Extension

Have a problem opening a .ABR file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what ABR files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .ABR file type?

The .abr filename extension stands for the Adobe Photoshop Brush (ABR) file type and format with reference to Adobe Photoshop, a high-end commercial bitmap image editor and digital artist's authoring environment by Adobe Systems.

In Adobe Photoshop, a brush is the most versatile artist's tool that allows to paint, retouch, and perform a whole range of other actions. Brush shapes and their settings are saved in brush files (.abr), for which Adobe's proprietary binary format is used.

On a Microsoft Windows machine, default ABR brushes are stored in the directory "Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop\Presets\Brushes," while user's brushes are normally saved into the "%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe Photoshop\Adobe Photoshop Settings\Preset\Brushes" folder.

Brushes can be loaded, saved, and organized through Photoshop's built-in menu actions. Outside Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, brush files (.abr) can be either directly used with other image manipulation applications (like GIMP) or converted into bitmaps for import into other editors, using an array of ABR converter/viewer utilities.
