AOB File Extension

Have a problem opening a .AOB file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what AOB files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .AOB file type?

The filename extension .aob belongs to the DVD-Audio Audio Object (AOB) file format and type. AOB is part of DVD-Audio, an international standard for multichannel digital audio on optical disks (DVD).

A DVD-Audio disk can hold several versions of the same audio tracks in different quality, usually a regular stereo track plus a 6-channel track, both at 96 kHz/24-bit. DVD-Audio disks are usually copy-protected with the CPPM (Content Protection for Prerecorded Media) system and digital watermarks.

The DVD-Audio directory structure is very similar to DVD-Video, and many commercial "hybrid" DVD-Audio disks have both audio and video sections. In DVD-Audio, all actual audio data is stored in .aob files in the "AUDIO_TS" directory.

An .aob file is a digital audio file on a DVD-Audio disk. It is an MPEG container with an uncompressed Linear PCM (LPCM) or an MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing)-compressed audio stream.

DVD-Audio disks (and .aob files extracted from them) can be played with most software/hardware media players, however playback at extreme sampling frequencies (e.g., 192 kHz/24-bit) requires special software and/or hardware setups.
