ASP File Extension

Have a problem opening a .ASP file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what ASP files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .ASP file type?

The .asp filename extension stands for Active Server Pages (ASP) and belongs to the ASP Script (.asp) file type. ASP is a server-side web application framework developed by Microsoft for their proprietary Windows-powered IIS (Internet Information Services) server technology. ASP has been further developed into ASP.NET. Unlike ASP, ASP.NET script pages have the .aspx extension by default.

Although ASP is a Windows-specific technology, ASP script pages can be hosted on the industry-standard Apache server on other platforms as well, requiring additional modules and custom configuration.

An .asp file is a regular text file that contains HTML markup with VBScript or JScript code inserts and optional references to COM/ActiveX objects. Similarly to PHP, ASP pages must be processed by the server, before a final HTML source can be dynamically generated and served to a client. ASP scripts can be created and opened as source code in any text editor.

On Apple Mac OS X, the .asp extension specifically associates with the Apple System Profiler (ASP) application, denoting the ASP Report (.asp) file type/format. This often causes mishandling of Active Server Pages (ASP) files on Apple computers and commonly requires manual application launching action through the "Open with..." command.
