Opening DV5 files

Have a problem opening a .DV5 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what DV5 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .DV5 file type?

The .dv5 extension belongs to the obscure DV5 DVR (Digital Video Recorder) Recording format and the related DV5 file type. Similar to DV4, DV5 is a proprietary container format designed to store recording archives made by a certain type of DVR devices.

DV5 is an artificial format, invented and marketed by certain Asian companies as a means of distinguishing their DVR product lines from competition. DV5 is mainly attributed to AVTech. Like other private DVR-related formats, DV5 is based on using the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video codec because of its space-efficient compression algorithm.

A .dv5 file is a digital video file, a DVR recording most probably made by one of AVTech DVR systems. In most cases, DV5 recording archive files retrieved from a DVR system can be meaningfully opened and played back only with the proprietary software tool that came bundled with the DVR unit.

DV5 recordings are not directly playable by any major media player, requiring dedicated software to handle the DV5 format (e.g., various versions of the AVTech VideoPlayer tool).
