INDEX.PHP File Extension

Have a problem opening a .INDEX.PHP file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what INDEX.PHP files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .INDEX.PHP file type?

In the first place, it must be mentioned that in the vast majority of cases 'index.php' is not an extension but rather a complete filename ('index') with the .php extension. The .php extension itself definitively associates with PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor), a powerful open-source server-side scripting language and platform widely used across the Web.

A .php file is a plaintext file that contains a PHP source code that, when processed on the server side, yields a dynamically generated HTML page to be served to a client. Thus, the 'index.php' file is a PHP-based homepage of a website or its directory, automatically processed and executed by the server every time the web site (or directory) is accessed.

PHP-enabled servers are configured to automatically process and execute any 'index.php' files located at the site's root directory or other directories (just like regular 'index.htm[l]' files).

On some rare occasions, however, PHP-enabled web servers can be misconfigured, which can result in either serving 'index.php' files as they are (without preprocessing), or misleadingly attaching '.index.php' as a double extension to other filenames.
