Opening M1V files

Have a problem opening a .M1V file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what M1V files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .M1V file type?

The .m1v file extension represents the MPEG-1 Compressed Video (.m1v) file format associated with MPEG-1, a lossy video and audio compression standard developed by the Motion Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) and published as ISO/IEC 11172. MPEG-1 algorithms compress digital video data and corresponding audio tracks down to a bitrate around 1.5 Mbit/s with little loss of picture quality, making digital television and broadcasting possible.

An .m1v file is a digital container storing audio-visual information compressed using MPEG-1 coding techniques. Even though the MPEG-1 standard was developed in the nineties, it is widely supported by modern video players. Moreover, due to the fact that it is no longer covered by any licenses or patents and thus can be used for free, MPEG-1 is utilized in a large number of applications. One can open an M1V file by simply double-clicking it - the video and audio it contains will be opened by the default video player app (usually Apple QuickTime Player in Mac, Microsoft Windows Media Player in Windows).
