MDX File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MDX file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MDX files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MDX file type?

Files with the MDX extension are commonly associated with Warcraft III strategy gaming application and its expansion, The Frozen Throne created by Blizzard Entertainment. MDX files store customized 3D models and information about textures and meshes for units used in the games.

The model files can be recorded in two variants: with the .mdx extension or with the .mdl extension. The difference is that MDX is a binary format while MDL stores information on models and textures in the form of text documents.

MDX files may also be found with CD or DVD image files created with DAEMON Tools and Astroburn software. Such MDX files are aimed to replace the combination of MDS and MDF files by holding information about formatting of the disc in one file instead of two.

In addition, MDX files can represent multiple index files for database applications such as dBase IV or Borland InterBase. They usually come along with a matching DBF database file and contain information necessary to organize and navigate data stored in the related database.
