MPV4 File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MPV4 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MPV4 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MPV4 file type?

The filename extension .mpv4 belongs to a family of extensions related to the MPEG-4 multimedia container format. MPEG-4 is an internationally standardized method of compressing audio and video data developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), while MPEG-4 Part 14, or MP4, defines a standard container file format for multimedia content encoded with the MPEG-4 codecs. The only standard extension for the MP4 files is .mp4.

Most commonly, the .mpv4 file is a standard MPEG-4 container with a non-standard extension (.mpv4). The purpose of using non-standard extensions like .mpv4 is to allow additional non-MP4 content within an otherwise standard MPEG-4 container, or define vendor-specific codec setups. Such files (.mpv4) can be opened by any multimedia player or authoring tool that supports MPEG-4 in general. Certain software, especially on platforms that rely on filename extensions like Microsoft Windows, may require the .mpv4 extension to be changed to a more common one like .mp4.

Apart from that, the .mpv4 extension may sometimes be used interchangeably with the .m4v extension to denote raw, containerless MPEG-4 Visual (MPEG-4 Part 2) streams.
