ZIPX File Extension

Have a problem opening a .ZIPX file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what ZIPX files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .ZIPX file type?

The .zipx filename extension stands for the Extended ZIP Compressed Archive (.zipx) file type and format introduced by WinZip, a popular paid multi-platform archive manager by WinZip Computing. ZIPX is a new file format invented by WinZip's developers to support multiple compression algorithms and generally targeted at achieving the smallest archive size possible. The newest versions of WinZip use the ZIPX format by default.

A .zipx file is a compressed archive file in the ZIPX format created with WinZip or a compatible archiver. With ZIPX, one of the several pre-selected compression methods (LZMA, BZip, ZX, WavPack, etc.) is applied to a file's content, depending on its nature (image, multimedia, text, binary), to guarantee best compression.

Compared to the traditional ZIP format, ZIPX yields smaller file sizes, although .zipx files may be incompatible with certain archive management software.

Besides WinZip 12.1 and later, several other archive tools support the ZIPX archive format and are capable of creating and decompressing .zipx files. If installed, WinZip and other compatible archivers typically associate themselves with the ZIPX file type.
