ODS File Extension

Have a problem opening a .ODS file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what ODS files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .ODS file type?

The .ods filename extension denotes files in the OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) format, which is part of the broader OpenDocument (ODF) format. ODF is an open ISO-standardized definition of a number of frequently used office document sub-formats like ODS. ODS is designed as a standard format for handling electronic spreadsheet workbooks and is similar to the Microsoft's proprietary XLSX format.

Like all ODF document files, ODS files are based on XML (Extensible Markup Language). ODS files are used to store table data arranged in form of rows and columns as a spreadsheet. Besides that, an .ods file can contain embedded multimedia data. ODS workbook files can be opened with any office suite that supports the ODF standard. ODS workbooks can be also opened with MS Office Excel if the OpenXML/ODF extension is installed.

Internally, an .ods file is a ZIP archive containing a directory tree that corresponds to the document's XML structure, with all resources stored in subdirectories. ODS files can thus be browsed like ZIP archives with any archive manager, and this way resources like images can be easily extracted.
