Opening OMF files

Have a problem opening a .OMF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what OMF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .OMF file type?

The main association of the .omf extension belongs to the Open Media Framework Interchange (OMF, OMFI) format and the respective .omf file type. Developed by Avid Technology, OMFI is a proprietary binary format that can be used for both video and audio data and utilizes a track model, so that multiple tracks can be present in one .omf file. OMFI is an attempt to provide a standard means of multimedia data interchange among different systems and applications.

An .omf file is an audio and/or video file in the OMFI format. OMF files are system- and platform-independent.

Most commonly, .omf files are used to transfer audio tracks between different and otherwise incompatible audio editing applications, many of which are capable of exporting/importing OMF files. Besides audio, OMF files are also used to share animation and video tracks, with OMFI supported by most video editing applications.

Alternatively, the .omf extension appears in association with the Open Model Format (OMF) file type and format. The Open Model Format is a chunk-based binary format to store descriptions of vertex-based 3D models. OMF-based skeletal animations are often used in various computer games (e.g., S.T.A.L.K.E.R.). There are tools to convert .omf animation files into the .skl format.
