Opening JPF files

Have a problem opening a .JPF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what JPF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .JPF file type?

Along with the several other filename extensions (.jpx, .jp2, .j2k), the extension .jpf belongs to the JPEG 2000 graphical format and denotes the JPEG 2000 Image (.jpf, etc.) file type. JPEG 2000 is an internationally standardized (ISO/IEC 15444) raster graphics format, developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) as a successor to the older, yet extremely widely adopted JPEG standard.

A .jpf file is a JPEG 2000 bitmap image. Unlike JPEG, JPEG 2000 uses wavelet-based compression, supports alpha-channel transparency and different color spaces, and enables image scalability. Compared to JPEG, it allows to achieve smaller file sizes and obtain a better image quality, while JPEG 2000 images (.jpf, etc.) suffer less from compression-related artifacts.

Although far less common than the classic JPEG or PNG, JPEG 2000 found application in several specific areas such as biometric data storage, digital map imaging, etc. JPEG 2000 is also supported by a few modern web browsers. JPEG 2000 images (.jpf, etc.) can be opened in several graphics editors and all-purpose image viewers, with options of conversion into other bitmap formats.

In Java programming, the .jpf extension relates to the Java Pathfinder Application Properties File (.jpf) file type. Java Pathfinder (JPF) is a NASA-developed open-source model checking tool for Java applications. Running on top of a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), JPF acts as a JVM itself, letting the System Under Test (SUT) run in a controlled environment. Here, the .jpf file is a regular text file. It designates the SUT and contains application-specific class and source paths, command-line options, and other parameters. JPF plugins in IDE's such as Eclipse streamline application verification through .jpf files.
