PPT File Extension

Have a problem opening a .PPT file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what PPT files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .PPT file type?

The PPT file extension is typically assigned to presentation files created in Microsoft PowerPoint software application. It helps users build and share interactive business, academic or personal presentations on both Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

PPT files may contain images, animations, formatted text, video and sound effects used in the related presentation. It is possible to protect .ppt files with your own password to prevent access to the data they contain.

PPT was the default file extension for presentations created using PowerPoint versions up to Microsoft Office 2003. In PowerPoint 2007 and later editions the binary PPT format was replaced with a new XML-based format having the .pptx extension.

If you don't have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, you can open PPT files with other compatible viewer programs supporting the PPT file format. Another solution is to convert .ppt files into another file format using a variety of free utilities available online.
