Opening RTC files

Have a problem opening a .RTC file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what RTC files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .RTC file type?

The primary association of the .rtc filename extension belongs to the Microsoft RTC Connection File (.rtc) file type and format used with Microsoft Live Meeting, a Real-Time Communications (RTC) solution from Microsoft. Despite its End-Of-Life (EOL) process since June, 2014, Microsoft Live Meeting is still actively used in business environments.

The .rtc file is a connection token used to join Live Meeting online events. When double-clicked, an .rtc file causes the local Live Meeting client to launch and initiate a connection using the specified session ID and other credentials.

For joining a Live Meeting session through an .rtc file, both the .rtc and .rtc-ms file types must be associated with the Microsoft Office Live Meeting Router ("\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\LiveMeeting Shared\RtcRouter.dll"). A tell-tale symptom of a broken .rtc file type association is the "launch.rtc" file download suggestion issued by a web browser when attempting to join a Live Meeting conference through a link.

Besides, the .rtc extension represents the WIBU-KEY Remote Programming Context File (.rtc) file type and format, with reference to the WIBU-KEY hardware copy-protection devices used by commercial software products to enforce their licensing policies. Here, the .rtc file is a small binary data file, generated from the WIBU-BOX Context tab in the WIBU-KEY Control Panel against a given WIBU-KEY dongle for remote license renewal or update.

BrainVoyager QX, R.Goebel's advanced cross-platform software for visualization and study of neurophysiological activities of the human brain, uses the .rtc extension for its design matrix files (.rtc). Belonging to the Time Course Data (TCD) family, text-based design matrix files (.rtc) provide reference time course responses for building General Linear Models (GLM) in BrainVoyager QX.

The .rtc extension also has to do with the RainbowCrack Project, denoting compressed rainbow table (.rtc) files. A rainbow table is a huge data file that contains pre-calculated cryptographic hashes used for password cracking through hash matching. RainbowCrack is a paid hash-cracking utility that makes use of such rainbow tables (.rt) and their compressed versions (.rtc), providing tools for converting between the two formats (rt2rtc, rtc2rt).
