The .azw3 filename extension belongs to the Kindle Format 8 (KF8), the most recent electronic book (e-book) file format developed and released by Amazon for its Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Fire, and other e-book reader devices. KF8, also referred to as AZW3, is an advancement over the previous AZW format, now supporting HTML5 and CSS3 and giving better layout and formatting options.
An .azw3 file is an e-book in the KF8 (AZW3) format. It is a compiled version of a multi-file ePub XML/XHTML source tree. Depending on the device, KF8 files can also use the .azw and .mobi extensions. Any e-book purchased from the Amazon online store is delivered in the KF8 (.azw3) format, often with Amazon's proprietary DRM protection.
Amazon Kindle users can have any pre-owned e-book title(-s) converted into the AZW3/KF8 format at Amazon simply by sending the file(s) to their Kindle e-mail. Amazon's free KindleGen tool can also be used to create .azw3 e-book files from EPUB, HTML, or XHTML source files.
