RAF File Extension

Have a problem opening a .RAF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what RAF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .RAF file type?

The primary association of the .raf filename extension belongs to the Fuji RAW Image (RAF) format and file type. A raw image is an unprocessed dump of imaging data received from a camera's sensor matrix—a digital negative. Raw images are used as a means of retaining maximum image data, to be professionally edited later. RAF is a private raw-image format developed and used by Fuji, an established manufacturer of digital imaging devices. Most higher-end Fuji cameras (e.g., the FinePix series) are capable of saving pictures in both RAF and JPEG formats.

A .raf file is a large binary file (tens of megabytes) containing a RAF raw image. RAF images usually embed extensive EXIF metadata and a full-sized JPEG preview. Like other camera raw images, .raf files can be converted into the standard DNG (Digital Negative) format with preservation of metadata. Although Fuji RAF images can be directly previewed with a number of image-viewing tools, such files (.raf) are intended to be edited ('developed') in image manipulation applications.

Besides, the .raf extension also represents the Rich Appearance Format (RAF). It is a distinct container format developed by Sony to support animated 3D themes and boot splash screens (the "coldboot.raf" file) on PlayStation 3 (PS3) game consoles. A .raf file is a compiled resource package of a PS3 theme (.p3t). RAF files can be created with PS3 SDK, Rich Appearance Maker (RAM) and several other tools and are often modding material.

Alternatively, the .raf extension denotes the Riot Archive Format (RAF) implemented by Riot Games, Inc. for its MMORPG title League of Legends (LoL). RAF is a private binary container format for storing various resource files used in the game. RAF is a dual format, in which files with the .raf extension store file-list and path data, with the actual bulk of resource items is stored in .raf.dat files.

Apart from the above, the .raf extension also stands for the Robot Animation Format (.raf) used in the scope of the Open Platform for Personal Robotics (OPPR) framework by Philips. RAF files are animation scripts for the iCat user-interface robot (a robotic cat-face model that can imitate facial expressions and interact with humans), prepared with the Robot Animation Editor. RAF scripts can be compiled to drive the actual iCat robot.
