XSPF File Extension

Have a problem opening a .XSPF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what XSPF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .XSPF file type?

The .xspf filename extension unambiguously relates to the XML Shareable Playlist Format (XSPF) and associates with the .xspf file type. A subset of the Extensible Markup Language (XML), XSPF is an open playlist format that leverages the flexibility of XML to ensure complete portability and simplicity. XSPF allows heavy customization and extension, without breaking the base-level compatibility. XSPF is developed and advocated by the Xiph.Org Foundation.

An .xspf file is an XSPF playlist, a small plaintext (normally, UTF-8) file with a hierarchy of XML tags and textual data. The .xspf file does not contain any actual media data, it only contains references (names and URL's) to individual multimedia items included in the list. Any .xspf file can be opened/edited with a text editor.

Along with other playlist formats (M3U, ASX, etc.), XSPF playlists are supported by several major media players and web browser plugins. A number of online playlist generator services support XSPF playlists, too. There are several tools to validate XSPF files for correct syntax.
