XWM File Extension

Have a problem opening a .XWM file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what XWM files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .XWM file type?

The .xwm filename extension represents the xWMA Audio File (.xwm, .xwma) file type and format. Developed by Microsoft as part of their Windows Media Audio (WMA) Professional technology, xWMA is a container format for audio data encoded with the WMAv2 codec. xWMA is directly supported by Microsoft's XAudio2 audio API and used in many DirectX-based Xbox and PC games.

The .xwm file is an xWMA audio file. It is a RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) container, in which WMAv2 audio data is stored. In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim game, the .xwm music files are packaged inside the .bsa resource container. Other games, like Castle Crashers, store their sound assets (.xwm) without using any container wrappers.

xWMAEncode.exe, an official DirectX SDK command-line utility, allows to convert xWMA audio files to uncompressed WAV files, and vice versa. Besides xWMAEncode.exe, a number of unofficial/homebrew tools (e.g., Skyrim Audio Converter) exist for handling the xWMA audio format (.xwm, .xwma). Thanks to the xWMA ffmpeg plugin, the .xwm files can also be opened and played by several ffmpeg-based players.

As an abbreviation of 'xwatermark,' the .xwm extension is also assigned to temporary (scratch) files created by the xwatermark dynamic watermarking tool for the LaTeX/TeX typesetting environment. The .xwm file is created by xwatermark in the target directory in the process of exporting a LaTeX/TeX document as PDF and should be automatically removed, once the export is complete.
