IWD File Extension

Have a problem opening a .IWD file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what IWD files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .IWD file type?

The .iwd filename extension represents the Infinity Ward Datafile (IWD) file type used by the Infinity Ward (IW) game engine. The IW engine is the core technology behind the popular Call of Duty (CoD) series of first-person FPS shooter games, mainly focused on the WWII warfare. The CoD series is developed by Infinity Ward, a subsidiary of Activision, Inc.

All CoD games are based on different versions of the IW engine and use IWD files as default containers for all game resources, including level maps, sounds, textures, etc. An .iwd file is a regular ZIP archive (deflate mode) with a different extension. It can be directly opened with any archive manager that supports the ZIP format. Inside an .iwd archive, there is a directory structure that actually holds game data.

IWD files are a constant modding target. When loading resources from an .iwd container, the game checks the container file for integrity (CRC and file size), often refusing to read improperly 'modded' files.

Apart from various unofficial tools to work with .iwd files, a lot of custom content for different CoD games is available on the Internet.
