Opening MOF files

Have a problem opening a .MOF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MOF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MOF file type?

The .mof filename extension stands for the Managed Object Format (MOF) and its associated file type (.mof). Based on the Interface Definition Language (IDL), MOF is a text-based format and a formal language within the Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) framework.

A .mof file is a text file that holds a series of statements in the MOF syntax. Formally, the purpose of the .mof file is to manage classes, providers, properties, etc. for a given WMI repository, defining attributes for WMI managed resources. MOF files were mainly used with the (legacy) Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) software, with "SMS_DEF.mof" being the default MOF file.

MOF files are modified by system administrators as needed, using a text editor. A modified .mof file must be compiled, in order for the changes to come into effect. Compilation is performed using the MOF Compiler tool ("Mofcomp.exe" in the "%SystemRoot%\system32\wbem" directory) included in the WMI SDK.

In System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), the successor of Microsoft SMS since 2007, .mof files are not needed but can still be imported.
