What is the .P7C file type?
The .p7c filename extension belongs to the PKCS #7 Cerificate (.p7b, .p7c) file type, with reference to the PKCS #7: Cryptographic Message Syntax (CMS) standard. PKCS #7 is one of the Public Key Cryptography Standards (PKCS) based upon the specification initially developed by RSA Laboratories and currently maintained by the Internet Society (ISOC) through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as RFC 2315.
The .p7c (.p7b) file represents a PKCS #7 certificate. It is a specially structured binary SignedData storage holding one or more X.509 cryptographic certificates along with the so-called Certificate Revocation Lists (CLR's). Such .p7c/.p7b containers do not normally include private keys and are widely used to exchange cryptographic credentials (standalone certificates or entire chains of certificates up to the root authority, Root CA) for the purposes of establishing secure digital communication. Using various methods that include the command-line OpenSSL interface, PKCS #7 certificates can be converted to other common formats such as PEM (.pem, .cer) or DER (.der).
