PART File Extension

Have a problem opening a .PART file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what PART files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .PART file type?

The .part file extension is usually added to partially downloaded files. Many download managers (including the "Downloads" module of Mozilla Firefox) use the .part file extension for saving such temporary files. Being incomplete downloads, PART files cannot be opened or run, even if the user removes the .part file extension manually. After completing the download the corresponding program removes the .part extension automatically.

PART files can be of any size, limited only by the size of the downloaded file. Some download managers create several PART files for every download and combine them into a single file after getting all parts successfully.

Playing with PART files during download in certain situations may result into receiving an incomplete file (broken download). This happens because of the fact that the system locks the .part file in question and prevents the download manager from saving further downloaded data into it.
