What is the .STRINGS file type?

The verbose filename extension .strings applies to localization resource files (.strings) tightly integrated into the common application localization mechanism of the Apple Mac OS X and Apple iOS operating systems. Basically, .strings files help create multilingual interfaces for Mac OS X and iOS applications.

A .strings file is a regular text file that consists of a number of paired-up strings delimited with double quotes, representing translations of various text-based interface items into another language accompanied by developer's comments.

STRINGS localization files are usually present in every localized Mac OS X or iOS application bundle (.app), located in the language-specific .lproj subdirectories of the "Contents/Resources" folder (e.g.: "Contents/Resources/French.lproj/Localizable.strings").

On Apple Mac OS X, any .strings file can be opened directly in the Xcode IDE (if installed). In addition to that, just any Unicode-friendly text editor can be used to edit .strings files, allowing to perform application localization jobs on any other platform or OS. All STRINGS files must be saved in the UTF-8 or UTF-16 encoding, depending on the adopted development standard.
